Background

Inspiration

Damien D'aray was the privileged son of wealthy Georgia plantation owners. Or at least he was until the War Between the States tore the country apart. Some say Damien died during the War. There are even some who claim they helped dig his grave and bury him. Which raises the question of what a dead man is doing walking around Maddock, Montana ten years later and why is he so interested in gambling with others for their souls?

In mid to late June of 1876, Damien won the Dusty Lady saloon in a high stakes poker game and decided to keep it and settle down in Maddock rather than sell it and move on.

The original source of inspiration for Damien was the character of Nicholas Pitt from Loren D. Estleman's classic western short story, Hell on the Draw and his look was based on Eric McCormack's character, Clay Mosby, from Lonesome Dove: The Series. Over time, though, his conception has changed to where he's a blending, personality-wise, of both Pitt and Mosby.

Description

Damien D'aray is a tall, well-favored man. Intense black eyes stare out of a handsome face framed by shoulder-length curly black hair and a neatly trimmed beard and moustache. His movements are slow and lackadaisical, filled with a natural grace, and when he speaks his voice is rich with the cultured accent of Southern gentility.

He is dressed in a fine, white linen shirt with a thin black bow tie, a double-breasted red velvet vest, a platinum chain draped between the watch pocket and one button, pinstriped black wool pants tucked into black stovepipe boots, a black frock coat, and a black cavalry hat complete the outfit. All clothes are of fine quality and well tailored. Belted about his waist is a black gun belt. The holster is canted so as to angle the barrel slightly forward along his leg and is secured to his thigh with a thin strip of rawhide. Occasionally his coat swings far enough open to flash a well cared for .44 Remington, carved ivory grips contrasting sharply with the black metal of the gun frame.
